Forty Acres Fresh Market News July 23, 2024
Your Watermelon Days Are Numbered
The good news is we still have a few sweet and juicy seeded Georgia watermelons available. The bad news is that once they're gone we'll be out of watermelon for weeks until the local harvest begins.
With a price of only $11 each, these Georgia-grown seeded watermelons can be found under the Delivery Add Ons section. Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you've got til it's gone? Don't miss this summer delight!
Aaahh Grow It! Grow It Good
We’ve been telling you about the amazing produce coming in during the growing season. You thought everything looked delicious, but you just didn’t get around to ordering your own Grown Good Box. “I’ll get it next week” you vowed.
Unfortunately, produce is never promised. While you’ve been thinking about placing an order you’ve missed the local asparagus, rhubarb, sugar snap peas, early spinach, and spring strawberries. And those local sweet cherries you wanted? Last week was their...well last week.
Now July is winding down and while the ephemeral Midwest growing season takes with one hand, it is still giving with the other. Peaches are coming in sweet and juicy. Blueberries, blackberries, cucumbers, and green beans of all kinds are being harvested every week.
It’s time for you to stop missing out on the Grown Good Box! This seasonal offering is packed with an abundant, preselected mix of USDA organic and sustainably grown local produce. The Grown Good Box features produce sourced from BIPOC producers including Urban Growers Collective; urban farms like Windy City Harvest, and family operations like Mick Klug Farm.
The contents of the box are constantly changing so you never know what you’re gonna get. This week you might find cucumbers grown less than an hour from Chicago, blackberries, peaches, carrots with lustrous tops, and crisp green beans.
The Grown Good Box is $35 and can be found in "Specialty Boxes" under the Fresh Produce Boxes section. Don’t miss out on the best tastes of the season!
Are You Gonna Eat That? You Should.
This week's recipe is all about reducing your food waste. The lustrous leafy main that sits atop the season's crisp, sweet, local carrots is not mere decoration. Did you know that carrot tops are edible? Before you chop them off and discard them, try adding them to this basil pesto recipe. So at this week's Austin Town Hall Farmers Market, head to the Forty Acres Fresh Market booth and grab a bunch of carrots and a bundle of basil and whip up a batch of pesto to dip those carrot bottoms in.
